Preventing Child Abuse and Neglect

Preventing Child Abuse and Neglect : Parent-Provider Partnerships (PCAN) was created initially for connecting with the child care community in an effort to reduce the risk of child abuse and neglect of infants and toddlers. PCAN supports child care professionals in using their natural relationships with parents to provide support, developmental guidance, and information. The Children's Trust of SC has found that much of the content transfers well to the efforts of other service providers working with families that have young children.

PCAN fills a unique niche by focusing on the prevention of child abuse and neglect. It goes beyond the typical mandated reporter training currently provided to child care professionals by promoting 5 protective factors that support and strengthen families. The protective factors: parental resilience, social connections, knowledge of parenting and child development, concrete help in times of need, and children’s healthy social-emotional development, can be successfully addressed in child care settings- but really exist in any situation involving parents.

This PCAN curriculum consists of 10 units focused on three overarching areas: 1) Building effective relationships with parents and their very young children; 2) understanding the impact of abuse and neglect on infants and toddlers; and for directors; and 3) helping directors build workplaces that support staff in reducing the risk for child maltreatment.

Each unit in PCAN incorporates a relationship-based and reflective approach to learning. Activities, exercises, and the overall structure of each session provide opportunities for participants to experience learning relationships with their trainers and with one another. Additional themes integrated into each unit include cultural diversity; the link between the content of that unit and prevention of child maltreatment; and the concepts and skills involved in self awareness, careful observation, and flexible response to support effective relationship-building and problem solving.

If you are interested in scheduling a training for your group all you need is 15 persons and a meeting space. The fee is $10 per person and CTSC will provide all handouts and materials.

If you require an evening or early morning time and you are more than 100 miles from Columbia, SC, additional travel costs may be applicable.
