CONTEST - 2011-2012 Safety and Prevention Calendar

The 2011-2012 Safety and Prevention Calendar Contest for children kindergarten through 5th grade is now complete.

Created from student artwork, this calendar is designed to raise awareness about preventable injuries, the leading cause of death and disability of children 1 to 14.  With the childhood injury rate in South Carolina one and a half times higher than the national average, Safe Kids South Carolina and its local coalitions are committed to lowering these statistics by educating children and families about injury risks and prevention.  The monthly safety messages in the calendar bring injury prevention directly to kids and their families.

Contest

Open to all South Carolina elementary school students, kindergarten - 5th grade, students were asked to draw a picture depicting a safety message.

Winners

Each participating elementary school conducted the first round of judging at their school and then submitted the school's top three pieces of student artwork to the Safe Kids South Carolina state office in Columbia.

The second round of judging was conducted in Columbia, at which time 13 winners were chosen - one for the calendar cover and for each of the 12 calendar months. State winners for 2011 will be appointed Safe Kids ambassadors at a special award luncheon ceremony in April 2011. School level winners receive special certificates of participation. Safe Kids Calendar Artists and Ambassadors will be presented with a Safe Kids South Carolina flag for their school, a cash award for art supplies and safety equipment, and copies of the 2011-12 Safe Kids Safety and Prevention calendar for every student at the winner's school (up to 1,000 copies).

The top ten counties of both categories were chosen to allow every student in that county to receive calendars to educate children and their families about the risk of unintentional injuries and reduce these high rates.
