Prevent Child Abuse SC History

Prevent Child Abuse South Carolina was established in Columbia in 1975 as the Council on Child Abuse and Neglect following the death of a 2-year-old who had been beaten by his mother’s boyfriend. Through the efforts of the Richland County Legal Auxiliary and other concerned groups, the organization was incorporated as The Council on Child Abuse and Neglect, a not-for-profit agency committed to education, intervention and treatment. In the 1990s, the organization became the state chapter of Prevent Child Abuse America and changed its name to Prevent Child Abuse South Carolina. Though the name is different, the commitment remains to education and training, public awareness, advocacy and technical assistance in program development.
